Early indications are that the Core i7 will offer either more processing performance per watt compared with earlier products (estimated at around 20%), or lower power consumption per unit of processing performance than its predecessors. This is great news for the embedded computing community, where the talk is not merely of performance, but performance per watt. The acronym on everyone’s lips is ‘SWaP’ – Size, Weight and Power. There was much more about the Core i7 that excited the embedded market. The significance of Intel's Core i7 to embedded computing is explained in this white paper.
The Department of Defense designed the Stiletto program to be a challenge; testing contractors to find and implement new technologies and methodologies allowing the DoD to take full advantage of latest advancements. Wanting to rise to the challenge as the company had done in previous nautical programs; the engineers at Azimuth knew it would be no easy task to build a distributed leading edge embedded system that could withstand the rigors of high-speed pursuits in rough seas. The embedded computing platform must perform flawlessly within the carbon fiber material used in Stiletto’s hull, which has been known to put special demands on electronics. After the company’s assessment, it found the open modular platform it was looking for with the Kontron CP6012, a 6U CompactPCI CPU board. This high performance, PCI Express based computing blade enables the Azimuth system to handle data throughput like a server, and because of its dual-core processor technology, it gives the Stiletto crew approximately twice the performance of previous generation processors at similar power consumption for its bandwidth intensive operations.
The challenges of designing embedded systems that are able to meet the ever-increasing demands of industrial applications cannot be solved by simply throwing memory and CPU cycles at them. Three characteristics of these applications present particular challenges for the system designer. Typically, they are complex, with diverse devices and software components; they must support sophisticated HMIs; and they have limited computing resources. Persistent publish/subscribe messaging (PPS) can simplify the design of embedded industrial systems. A Persistent Publish/Subscribe (PPS) messaging model is an excellent choice for embedded industrial systems which must integrate many disparate devices and components, as well as support a sophisticated Human-Machine Interface (HMI). PPS messaging simplifies the design of these systems and facilitates implementation of HMIs built with Adobe Flash Lite.

No computer runs perfectly forever. Somewhere along the line, something will go wrong. While each successive version of Windows has been that much more reliable and self-healing, that's never been an argument to forgo a good collection of software tools.
Can Google Android phones compete with the Apple iPhone? A few weeks ago, Google loaned me a Nexus One smartphone for experimentation, and I've spent the time since downloading applications and writing my own code. The good news is that the platform is not only competitive but is often a better choice than the iPhone for many programmers and the enterprises that employ them.
Starting around $1,500 and typically costing thousands more, the systems reviewed here stretch the term "laptop" to the limit. They're big and bulky, sometimes weighing 10 pounds or more, and three hours of battery life is about all you can expect. But with their fast dual-core and quad-core processors, discrete graphics, gobs of RAM, and big beautiful screens, these are the luxury sports sedans of mobile computing. They have plenty of horsepower for gaming and often deliver the goods for home theater as well.
Because PC acquisition costs typically account for only 20 to 30 percent of TCO, Intel does not fixate on these costs alone. Instead, Intel aligns their PC fleet investments and management practices with their strategic goals.
IDC estimates that the average cost of deployment activities is $527 per PC, but can go as high as $700 or more depending on the time spent by IT staff and users. That is roughly 20 to 40 percent of the cost of the PC. Reducing the cost of deployment will significantly reduce the total cost of ownership - especially in combination with cost-saving features in Microsoft Windows 7.
Microsoft Windows 7 overwhelmingly met the requirements and showed improved performance and stability compared with Microsoft Windows XP. In surveys, 97 percent of users of the beta release said they would recommend the OS. A conservative total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis estimated potential net present value (NPV) of USD 11 million over three years, mainly due to lower support costs.

Online money service loses business, restores whistleblower's accountPayPal users have reacted angrily to the suspension of Cryptome's account by the e-payment company and are using Cryptome's website to display their emails, cancelling their PayPal accounts.Although PayPal has now restored Cryptome's account, it was suspended for several days following Microsoft's action against the whistle-blowing site and the temporary shutdown of Cryptome by its hosting company. Faced with criticism over its heavy-handed approach, Microsoft claimed afterwards that it had not wished Cryptome to be shut down "While Microsoft has a good faith belief that the distribution of the file that was made available at that address infringes Microsoft's copyrights, it was not Microsoft's intention that the takedown request result in the disablement of web access to the entire cryptome.org website on which the file was made available," said the company's counsel, Evan Cox.

If there is a "burning question" as an organization drives its ITIL process implementation through the planning stages, it is "... which comes first - Change or Configuration Management?" And, as if that were not enough of a challenge, it is followed by, "Can you do one without the other?" and, close on its heels, "If you do one without the other will you achieve any meaningful level of success?"
I'm all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let's start with typewriters.
Everything you want to know, but were afraid to ask With the recent economic downturn, many IT organizations are increasingly of the need to partner with their customers to ensure they are delivering the right services at the right price. Service catalogs are a powerful tool for ensuring your alignment with your customers, and for providing greater visibility and cost control capabilities. Not only does it allow your customers the ability to maximize their utilization of IT, it also provides a central part of any shared service or ITIL service management implementation. Despite being a critical element central to many processes, a service catalog can be difficult to implement. Many service catalog projects underestimate the effort or leave out critical components. These result in systems or documents that languish on the shelf and have little or no use. Often the focus of the project is on the activity or the specific technology and not the intended business use leading to a lack of adoption by the business. In a recent survey only 57% of the respondents characterized their service catalog implementations as successful. What can be done to ensure your service catalog project is not one of those left on the shelf? What can you do to make sure it is successful? Our experience across many service catalog implementations both large and small has shown that the keys to success lie in these four domains: Motivation: A mutual understanding and clear communication of the reasons why you should implement a service catalog is critical for engaging your stakeholders and ultimately is essential to success Design: The initial design of service catalog should be built with the customer in mind, emphasizing their business needs Implementation: There are some common pitfalls during the initial implementation that can easily be avoided Managing: Ongoing success results from the infrastructure and processes to manage the service catalog over the long term This article explores each of these areas listing five key insights, or top tips, to keep in mind when building your service catalog Motivation: Why implement a service catalog? For any project to be successful all the stakeholders need to know the reasons the project is undertaken and have a common vision of the goals. Here are the key reasons both IT and the business will benefit from the service catalog. Brings IT closer to the business ? Until you start to define what you do in terms that the business can understand and align yourself in a way that clearly supports what the business does, you are still in a technology silo and not doing real service management.
